Match Report Saturday 24.05.08 Putney A Vs Old Wimbledonians Away Toss: Lost The day starting with big Travis injured and crying off (although he did offer his services if I did’nt find anyone), it was a struggle to find the 11th player, after about 40 phone calls finally found Peter Lamsley who showed great enthusiasm and stepped in; last minute to the challenge (thanks Peter). We finally reached the ground with 11 men and having lost the toss for the third time in a row we were put in by the opposition to bat which did not look that bad considering that the weather was good and the pitch looked even better. Also the bowling attack did not look very threatening and they had only ten men. We opened our innings with Julian and Umair (who willingly stepped up to the responsibility) having said that we always find ways of getting ourselves into trouble especially with the bat. Opening partnership yielded just 13 runs till Julian was caught to a missed timed pull shot for 5. Chin and umair tried to build a partnership which got us another 15 runs till umair was caught for 11. Will and chin tried to re-build but could not get more the 27 runs on, till will departed for 28 and the new man Mike henshall was out for 0 to a spectacular catch. This led to mini collapse as chin followed in the next over for 11 and peter then for just 1. At this stage Putney was 75 for 6 in just about 18 overs. Racchitt (45) and Jim (27) had well needed stand of 60 of the next 12 overs to take the score to 135 till racchitt departed to a stumping where the keeper gave him enough time to get back. Jim followed shortly and Mike (3) Shakir (12*) Ben (1) tried to get as many as we could but failed to use all the end overs and we were bowled out for169. 20-30 runs short of what would have been ideal but having been reduced to 75/6 it gave us a good chance to defend with a heavy bowling attack. The bowling spell started with Brooksie and shak who bowled well but were a little short in the length. Shak got 2 wickets in his opening spell and finished with 2 for 35 of 7 where as Ben although economical could not get a breakthrough 0 for 23 of 6. Chin (8-25-0) and Will (10-37-2) took the two ends respectively and bowled well and not letting too many runs leak to always keep us in the game. Umair took a brilliant diving catch of Will’s bowling and soon the opppo were 4 down with around 80 on the board of 20 some overs. At this stage the partnership although slow started to build and Mike henshall while fielding in gully got a bad bounce and received a blow to his head leaving a cut and some swelling. With a doctor on each side being present in the sides and to avoid any medical clashes it was decided to send Mike to the hospital as a precaution. At this stage it became even more important to attack the ball with ten men to restrict the oppo to get any easy runs. With 6 overs to go the opposition required 30 to win and had 4 wickets in hand as they were only playing ten men. Umair (4-14-1) and Racchitt (9.2-29-1) were both bowling tight but we put down 2 absolute sitters from their top scorer and the 7th batsman in the next 2 overs and did not attack the ball enough to try and restrict the 2’s and 3’s. This meant that the oppo needed only 3 of the last over and had 3 wickets in hand to do so and managed to get them in the first 2 balls. Like I said before we were about 20-30 runs too short to start off with, however the bowling and good fielding earlier in the innings got us a very good chance to win the game and we let ourselves down again, all in all very disappointing as this game should have been won. Hopefully we can learn form this early in the season and can avoid similar losses in the future. No Man of the match (Skipper would have love to take man of the match had we won) |
