Heavy morning rain meant that the trip down to Croydon was likely to be in vain, and following a pitch inspection much debate was had as to whether or not there would be a game at all. After agreeing that it would be possible to play a shortened 30 over match and with the prospect of brightening skies Selsdon proceeded to place incredible quantities of sawdust on the pitch and rolled it with much enthusiasm that the pitch turned from a muddy brown colour to a patchy blonde colour. We won the toss and decided to bowl first and got off to a reasonably good start with Mallick bagging 3 wickets from his 10 overs. The very wet in-run to the wicket caused Ed Dixon some problems. Ed McVarish was brought into the attack late and bowled superbly taking 4 wickets for 23 runs off only 5 overs. With hindsight, he should have been bowled earlier. In restricting Selsdon to 131 all out off 29 overs, we felt we had done a reasonable job and a few good partnerships should have seen us through to a victory. Some very accurate bowling by their opening pair and in particular D. White (6 for 32) put paid to that idea. Doug Shaw and Julian started the innings comfortably enough but once Doug, Julian and Hussain had been dismissed there was the all too familiar collapse from the middle and lower order and only Ed Dixon's flamboyant 16 (4 fours) brought any cheer to the team. We were all out for the season's 2nd lowest total of 84, and what made the loss all the more frustrating was that Selsdon had not fielded a particularly strong team as some of their key players were unavailable. The loss against Selsdon meant that they were placed one position above us in the final league table standings as we ended up having identical points to them. |
