Match report Putney A Vs St Lukes Away on the 30.08.08 With the weather taking a break at 28 degrees and after a very disappointing result previous week Putney was set out to put things right with a relatively strong balanced team to Walton upon Thames. Upon arrival we noticed make shift facilities by the oppo as their ground was under refurb and the recreation ground pitch which looked overall average had a hole size of a ball on a good length from one end . However this did not trouble us too much as the grounds man did the best he could to get it covered up before the match started. With the oppo skipper and most of his side running late Putney won the toss with the make shift skipper under strict instructions to bat first from the rest of the team. It was not to be. Scotty Gilbchrist and Mike Henshall opened the batting for Putney and gave us a good start capitalising on the fact that the opposition fielded only 8 men. Putney was 42 for no loss after five overs and things were looking promising. However Mike (10) being the first victim of the gremlins in the pitch scooped one to the bowler to a ball which stopped on him. Immediately from the other end Scott Gilbert (32) held out to midwicket trying to keep the scoring going. With 2 new men at crease Chin (19) tried his best after a few cautious ones to maintain the rate however was a victim to a very good running catch at long off. Doug and Jules tried to create a partnership however with Julian (4) pulling his calf muscle early in his innings prompted a runner and the next ball was caught at mid off. Chris D (23) and Doug Shaw (27) tried to build a partnership which was not to be. Things were getting bad to worst and with Racchitt (2) lasting only 3 balls at the crease (getting out after playing several (7 being the verdict) different shots to the slowest ball ever and still missed and watched the ball go and knock the bails off), surely did not get any better. Jim (1) did not trouble the scorers much both Shak (13) and mallik (3) tried to make the tail wag but after shak being caught ben (0) did not trouble the scorers at all. Classic Putney collapse and a poor shot selection meant that the oppo were only chasing 142 to win. At Tea the mood was grim and lack of a hot brew didn’t help however I’d like to think that the choco bikkies and the penguin quiz on the wrappers lightened the mood a bit and got the team focussed. Putney went out to the field knowing that the oppo only managed to up their count by 1 and their work was cut out. Mallik turned out very unlucky as catches went down, however brooksie picked up 2 vital wickets from the other end. Racchitt and Shak replaced brooksie from the one end but could not keep the scoring down, while mallik finished his quota from the other end continuing his unlucky though good spell ((10,4,28,0). At drinks things were not looking good as the oppo had managed a good partnership with a young opener and an experienced keeper nurturing his innings. After a 61 run partnership and suggestions of all sorts coming from the experienced Putney line up skip was in a dilemma and under immense pressure. This brought chin from one end and brooksie back in the attack. Brooksie (9,1,48,3)managed knock the skipper’s leg stump with a dipping beamer which was strangely given as a no ball by the umpire. This got the entire team disgraced and for the better all fired up, all of a sudden Putney grasped 2 wickets in 2 consecutive overs with scott and chris holding on to the chances. This meant a tiny ray of hope was there for Putney as they had only 4 more wickets to get and the oppo requiring 30 odd runs to get. The oppo added another 16 runs to take their score to 125. Chin (8,4,10,3)continued to bowl tight and got an edge to first slip which Jules managed to grasp onto after a few juggles (4 to be precise) held on to left the opposition at 125/5. An inspired bowling change from the other end to get Mike henshall (2,1,2,2) on who in is first over knock the timber over without any added in the score meant that the win was in our hands to grasp. Next 2 dismissals came very quickly with Scotty grasping everything coming his way and ending up with 4 catches and top scorer and the man of the match. This was very good team effort and a great win and the team returned to the happy clubhouse. |
