Where the hell is Woodmansterne?! A long way away. Fortunately, the 45 minute car journey was well worth it when we arrived to beautiful countryside and clear blue skies ahead of the Sunday 3s match vs the Badgers. With the first proper sunny day of the year and feeling (over)confident from our losing run chase against the Bricklayers the week before, it was an easy choice to bat first, get run(s) on the board and set up an early lead to defend. Best laid plans and all that… After a frustrating opening spell against some tight, consistent opening bowlers, Putney made steady progress as the overs progressed. Amogh set to his task admirably considering the manner of his late arrival, providing a solid 15 after we lost Sam (4) trying to take advantage of strangely lopsided field setting. Foz steadied the ship with some impressive stroke-play for 36 - including a champagne moment worthy six over point. Luke fell to a pretty impressive direct hit runout for 3 and despite an energetic innings from Tycho (9) - backing up his heckling from the boundary with some dynamic running between the wickets - we needed to get a move on. Thankfully, Noman was on-hand to provide what we hoped would be a match winning innings of 41 off 48 balls before being caught by an incredible diving catch at square leg by Badgers’ Jake Gordon. Jake would return later to do his best Jos Buttler impression, with our bowling attack providing a supporting role in his one man show. With 140 the total, our defence started solidly. With contributions from opening bowlers Flood (3/17), captain Rob Taylor (1/26) and first change Shipar (1/19) we had the Badgers 25-4 early on - victory looked more than possible! Unfortunately 65% of their runs then arrived at the crease with no.5 bat, Jake Gordon. Despite further wickets falling at the hand of Flood and Luke (1/17), Jake managed an unbeaten 91 runs off 70 balls, including 11 fours and 5 sixes with a strike rate of 130 to lead the Badgers to a comfortable victory inside 30 overs. On the bright side, this gave us more time to enjoy the sunshine with Thunderbitch and beer! Well played Badgers, particularly Jake. On to the next one… Awards: MOTM: Sam Flood for 3for17 bowling off 8 overs DotD: Noman for getting undressed after every ball while batting TFC: Josh for backing up his second ball duck by conceding the winning runs off his 4 ball spell. Champagne Moment: Foz for his flamboyant six over point. |
