Ham and Petersham Conditions: English The season’s opener greeted us with the same weather we left off from last year, still this could not dampen our spirits and after winning the toss, we took the field. Dave Lennon and Steve Wilcock opened the attack for us and what an opening spell it was; with accurate and tight bowling they took three quick wickets between them reducing our opponents to a total of 13 for 3 off 10 overs. The highlight of this opening onslaught for us all was Dave’s appeal to the umpire , “HOWZATâ€, after clean bowling their No 3, to which the umpire replied, “well yes he’s obviously outâ€, the 1st Harry Fernandez of the year……. Well the slow start gathered pace and their middle order were soon up and running. Luke Sullivan and Felipo Pollara took over the attack for us, the latter having no joy this time but his first overs for Putney were solid, good things round the corner I’m sure. Luke has obviously been in the nets all winter claiming his first 3 wickets of the season of which I’m sure there is more to come. There could have been four if it was not for the somewhat “miss-communication†between WK and 1st slip, we will put that one down to rustiness. Sensing the wicket was “playing up†the skipper brought him self on and managed two wickets, one of which through no help of his own produced the champagne moment of the match. Quite simply an outstanding catch at point by Chris Donovan, with out doubt a contender all ready for the season. With two run outs courtesy of quick thinking by Dave Lennon and Tristam Leach, the oppo were knocked off for 73. In the bag some would say, “We’ll all be home by 5.00pmâ€. After tea Brett Woudstra and Angus Braham strolled out to murmurings of Greenidge and Haynes and opened the batting for Putney. A solid start we were ¼ of the way there before our first wicket fell. Quote AB “He wont bowl a better ball all season†Right…Chris Donovan batting three forged a strong partnership with Brett and things were looking very good indeed. Putney were for 50 when the 2nd wicket fell only 24 to win. Well ….In true spectacular fashion and reminiscent of many middle order batting collapses we then lost 5 quick wickets for three runs. First to go was Brett, followed by Tristam, I think he was still wondering why he was not given out the previous ball, followed by Nigel, Barry and then Dave. We were truly in the “merd†Thank fully though the storm passed and Chris Donovan steered us through to the win with an unbeaten 26, and quite rightly claimed the Man of the Match award. All in all a good warm up to the season ahead, looking forward to the next game. PM |
