One of the great fixtures of the season, Richmond CC hosts a very fine pavilion and even one or two county matches a season. On losing the toss we were forced onto the field in very hot and dry conditions. The batsmen approached the wicket with trepidation as news of Putney’s 7 man bowling attack had spread. 185 runs later we claimed our first wicket of the day, their captain given LBW on 96, a minor victory. It was a long afternoon for us all, the pick of the bowlers were Shaqir and Dave Haddiway taking two wickets each along with very respectable figures from Luke Sullivan who removed their other opener for 88. It was clear the opening bats were very much on form however once gone we managed to get in amongst them. Special mentions to Nige Harris taking his first ever catch behind the stumps (Champagne moment) and to Dave aka Harry Fernandez for throwing the ball at the departing batsmen once he had caught and bowled him. Ever the gentleman he did quite rightly apologize afterwards. With 316 to win off 45 overs we were confident of chasing them down and their team talk was all about containing the Putney batsmen. Unfortunately we lost two early wickets, Owain even managing to get himself out twice in a row? Tristram steadied the ship with a very fine 53 supported well by Mike Henshall (22), Skip (25) and Shaqir (28). Unfortunately with the pressure mounting and the lure of a great bar in the pavilion, out tail was cut short, and we lost the last 4 wickets for 3 runs. 145 AO Though in hindsight you could say we were well beaten, we were, the team once again showed resilience in the field. Richmond is a great fixture, and one we shall look forward to next season. Man of the Match –Tristram Leach. |
