The inaugural "Challenge Match" between the Sunday 1's and '2's had a distinct PCC and BBQ flavour to it and provided a full day of quality entertainment. On a glorious sunny day, the Sunday 1's batted first with Mike Oliver opening in style with some perfectly placed cover drives. The Sunday 2's then brought on their spinners early, who were able to find some movement and restrict the 1's to 70 odd for 4 off 22 overs. After drinks and with the skipper's instructions to get on with it, Barry Perinparaja(41) and Scott Gilbert (34) soon began an Aussie / Sri Lankan style blitz with a partnership of 68, which included some hefty blows and wristy shots and the champagne moment, when Scott hit a six of his first ball. New recuit David Hadaway (41) then came in and without needing any time at all to play himself in, found the boundary with ease, which also later helped him earn the Man of the Match. For the Sunday 2's, Ian Almond and a determined Quentin 'Britney' Spears bowled really well to claim the middle order scalps. However, this didn't stop the Sunday 1's posting a decent total of 248 for 8 off 40 overs, as the tail wagged with runs and sixes from Shaqir Iqbal and Paul McCann. Enter Rachitt's team and the Sunday 2's, who with impressive batting line up were up for the run chase. Willow though, had other ideas and in customary fashion made the early breakthrough. However, Doug Shaw (28) and Chin Ratnayake (31) didn't waste any time and played their natural shots as the Sunday 2's cruised to a hundred off just 17 overs, thanks also to a stylish and patient knock from Peter Lamsley (28), another recent recruit. Although the Sunday 2's were ahead on run rate, Ben Brook kept chipping away, taking 3 wickets to keep the match in the balance. A partnership formed between James Peters (25) and Quentin (21) and they looked set to take the game right down to the wire, but then followed a few defining moments. First, the Harry Fernandez moment, when JP skied an up and under to David who remarkably dropped the catch, but with JP watching the ball and Quentin setting off on the 100m from the other end, we seized the run out opportunity . Rachitt then came to the crease, with a chance to steer his team to victory but sent his first drive straight to the opposing skipper at mid on, handing the match and the bragging rights to Paul, who then finished off the tail. The Sunday 2's ended up with 176, conceding victory to the Sunday 1's, another healthy winning margin. With our tea lady gone walkabout for the afternoon, it was left to an Englishman 'Chez Brooksey' and 'Beefy' to raise the BBQ steaks and feed 22 hungry men, who were all facing and still on strike (Yes, hunger strike ... the sacrifices we make to get selected !!!!). With a total runs aggegate of 424, eight batsmen scoring 25 or more runs and the bowlers recording 500 fantasy points, this match spoke volumes for our Sunday cricket and the contribution of all new players. Before bad light could stop Putney, there was still time for The Met's Forensic team to pay us visit, whilst Shaqir was passed out in 'the lounge' on 3 burgers and enjoy last beers watching the best game of Euro 2008 so far between the Turks and the Czecks. A perfect Sunday then and very much of our own making. Perhaps time then to summon the WAG's to appear at next month's 6 a side tournament (PCC's version of Royal Ascot) as well as look forward to our next inter club classic at the end of the season.
