Dulwich v Putney By A.D.Braham (AKA: Angrus) Like revenging angels the Putney Boys headed to the badlands of South London to right the wrong that befell them in the last battle with Dull-itch. Winning the toss Paul ask Dulwich to bat and with fire (Will Middleton) from one end and brimstone (Steve Wilcox 6-1-21-0) from the other Putney had the fleshy openers dancing in the wicket. Having never settled it was only a matter of time before Will (8-0-50-1) made the break through and it was through a combination of Paul’s field placement and Steve’s fine fielding that the first catch was taken. Braham was brought on and seemed to have forgotten everything his anger management course had told him, however he did remove the Dulwich number three with a leg stump yorker. He then had the remaining opener magnificently caught by The Piston at mid-off and finished with figures of 6-1-14-2. McCann (3-0-21-0) was bowling at the other end and let’s just say it was not his day. Continuing with a pace attack Paul looked to Big Dave Lennon, Ed Forrester, Ratchit and Luke Sullivan to wrap things up. Ed (3-0-15-1) took a quick wicket and then off his own bowling ran out the batsman at the non-strikers end off a fiercely struck drive. Luke (6-0-28-2) bowled really well and removed two of their most attacking batsmen through a catch in the deep (Braham) and a brilliant pickup off his toes at gully by Ratchit (Champagne Moment). Ratchit (6-0-23-2) then turned on the style with the ball and bowled of their tail enders. At 135 for 9 Putney lost a little direction and unfortunately they managed to get to 185 off 40 overs. Paul asked Ratchit (37) and Brett (14) to open they got off to a fantastic start hitting the opening bowlers to all parts of the ground, after 3 over’s Putney where on 30 runs and going like a freight train. This forced their unusually shaped captain into a bowling change and to place 9 of his fielders around the boundary, an unusual field 8 overs in… This tied the openers down and Brett fell when the score was on 48 to a top edge. Mark (0) was in at number 3 and having scored a big ton for the team a few weeks ago great things where expected, however he fell to one of the great catches of 2008 and this sent a shudder through the team. Will (16) was next in an cut and slashed his way through until falling to a good ball. In came Big Dave (17) to smash it around, he on the other hand played a very cultured innings which included some very fine cover drives straight from the MCC’s 1979 coaching manual. Aashish (1) came in at 6 to steady the ship and then to press home the win, however to due to a slight lack of balance he was stumped by a combination of massive turn and the quick wits of the keeper. With Paul (16) and Angus (3) at the wicket the darkness fell across the ground, both metaphorically and in reality. Angus was pushing at thin air and was eventually caught behind. Steve (1), Luke (0) where both done for, however it was hard to see how they were out in the darkness. Ed remained defiant until the end. Putney’s batting did not fire and unfortunately fell for 124 all out. |
