A windy afternoon in Raynes Park was the venue for Brook's second jaunt as Putney skipper. Second toss lost too. Old Wimbledonians chose to bat and we took 33% of our chances in the first 2 overs, removing their opener with the champagne moment of the day, Owain Rose's diving catch at gully off a Willow wide. More chances were spilled, as the opener helped himself to 119 more runs than he should have. The 2 legspinners bowled in tandem; Pete Hill (1/37) found his rhythm and did well into the wind after a long spell out and Rose (0/43) getting probably too much turn. Nothing went our way and OW were looking pretty at 130 off 20 (40 over game) with runs were easy to come by. Even though the skipper (2/56) came on and bagged a couple, we were looking at a considerable target. Willow came back on to bowl out at the death, bowling really well into a stiff breeze and got the other opener (the centurion) with Brook taking a skyer at mid off . Another wicket in the same over, and we pegged them back a tad more. Then in Willow's next over he secured 2 more wickets, one with Brett doing what he should have 2 hours earlier and the 5th with a plumb lbw. First fivefor since 2006 for Wilcock (5/34) and we were already looking forward to the mandatory jug. During the tea (good egg sandwiches and a plethora of biscuits, no corned beef) we saw the highlights of the test and also the rain start to fall. Soon the rain died off and we went out, scoring well with über-aggressive Dawid Stolp (29) scoring from the getgo. Iqbal (35) relished the chance to open with a quickfire 35, including a nice straight six which on any other day would have been a champagne moment. After Dawid was yorked, Leach (37*) came in and after a couple of early shouts, built a solid partnership with Mallick (18*). At 113 for 2 off 21 we were sitting pretty. Then the rain came down horizontally and at great speed. We went indoors. Owain, next in and all padded up, got changed. The game was over. In his head. Little did he know that Brook is a result captain, and with the oppo skipper even more keen, we decided game on despite a waterlogged pitch, dark clouds all around and a large portion of negativity from Woodstra. Owain got his whites back on, padded up and earnt his second award of the day, the Harry Fernandez moment. The target was a revised 77 off 10 (bang on Duckworth Lewis by complete fluke). 4 more overs of water polo and we were on target before the rain came down once again and the game was off for good. Big up to Graeme Collins who turned out despite a neck injury meaning he couldn’t really move, also to Dawid Stolp who hadnt been to bed since Friday A good spirited team effort all round, man of the match to the metronome. |
