Welcome to the inaugural away-match match-tea report. I offer my most sincere apologies for the delay in publication of said description of cricketing gastronomy, as I know some of you have been struggling to contain their excitement (you know who you are) at the anticipation of an informative and yet somewhat pointless exercise. First up, the Saturday 1’s played down at Raynes Park against Old Thorntonians CC on Saturday the 23rd May. The ground itself was middling to good, if only we could say the same of the tea. A small and somewhat disappointing selection of sandwiches, which seemed to have been made with Chin’s new weight-loss regime in mind such were the sizes of the crust-less triangles. Bearing in mind the vegetarian nature of the home side, I suppose their choice of sandwich filling could be excused. Excused to the extent that you would excuse a sombrero-clad Mexican with pig flu from sneezing directly in your face, then attempting to fleece you of your wallet. The old favourite cheese and pickle was sadly lacking and we were left with a choice between either egg or tuna, both clearly fresh out of a tin if the taste and texture was anything to go by, let alone the aroma. Old Thorntonians managed to salvage some plus points on the crisp front however, offering the contents of a comprehensive ‘family-pack’ to choose from. I went for Worcester Sauce, hard to come by these days, its rarity and finesse of flavour likened in some circles to a bottle of Mouton Rothschild 2005. Also on offer were Prawn Cocktail, Bbq, Salt & Vinegar and the old staple Ready Salted. Chocolate Mini Rolls are always a crowd pleaser and provided a welcome partner to a cup of rather weak and flavourless tea. All in all, Old Thorntonians’ match tea is fairly middle of the road, it won’t fill you up, and you’ll get home gagging for kebab, but it might just surprise you. 4/10 |
