Match report Putney 2's Vs Battersea Ironside Home on the 16.05.09 The first league game of the season for the 2's and with only 3 members available from our regular side from last year the team was ready to take on the game will all vigour and determination. After losing the toss and being put into field the team was surprised with the oppo’s decision and rightly so. With a stiff breeze and overcast condition the ball was definitely doing a bit. Our start could have been much better had it not been for the extra’s that were given as very few runs came from the bat and the first break through came from T Grace’s end which baffled the opening bat and induced an healthy nick to James. After a short spell from the other end by Shaq, Matthew Rickard provided good support to Tim who picked up the second opener very soon to a good catch at backward point by Alex. We continued to try and take wickets however also continued to bowl quite a few extras and the no 3 and 4 batsmen put on a good partnership and were looking solid. Soon Racch picked up one of the bats and Rowan picked up the other bat from the other end due to some fine catching at gully by Doug. At one point the opposition looked at a score of 250 plus however holding 9 out of 12 catches and some mixed bowling Putney was able to restrict the opposition to a score of 213. Shaq (7.4-0-39-4) was the top wicket taker once he managed to bowl at the stumps Main points to note was the top scorer for the opposition was (no guesses) yup the extras 54 of them. With a slight worry that they might come to haunt us later we retired to tea. Putney opened with the experience pair of Kevin and Julian who could only nurture a partnership of 5 till Kevin was caught and in came debutant Andrew Woodhead. Andrew and Julian looked good and had a decent partnership of 36 till Andrew lost his wicket to an untimed short to short cover for 22. Jules continued to show his experience and tied one end however Doug next in did not last long and was dismissed for 1. Alex and Racch tried to speed the scoring while Jules kept his end tied until Alex was dismissed for 13 in comedy fashion trying to sweep an off spinner and only managed to guide the ball all along his arm and onto his stumps and Racch was dismissed nicking to keeper for 28. At this point we needed 90 odd runs with 15 overs remaining. Things were looking promising with Tim’s reputation to clear the boundary and Julian playing the anchor role till Tim was dismissed with the score at 157. Not many overs remaining and run rate rising with every dot ball Jules tried to play in the most unnatural way most have seen him in ages missed a low full toss and was finally dismissed for 55 (4 less than he should have got, as per him yes the same story the scorer missed his runs somewhere). Unfortunately not more was achieved after that and we were bowled out for 182. All in all the slight worry at tea time did come to haunt us in the end. Only IF we were able to control the extras this would have been a walk in the park. Positives of the game, definitely with so many new guys how the team pulled together to restrict the opposition to 213, and we were just one good partnership away from a victory. Hopefully we will put these wrongs right sooner than later and enjoy a victory next week. |
