Another great win for the Saturday 4’s. A great team effort and a solid performance from the team. The beautiful sunny day began with the team winning the toss, yeh once again – Word on the street is the toss winning coin has heads on both sides – but it’s a well-kept secret by the team skipper. Winning the toss the skipper chooses to bat first given the hard batting wicket. Like always the skipper rushed the openers, Ben and Giles, into the middle. The opposition was quite disciplined – they were very consistent with their line and length giving no loose balls to the opening pair. With building pressure - the team lost Giles early and forced Ben Gallop onto the pitch. With Ben and Ben at the crease, the pair were looking solid with many photogenic, cover drives, pulls and hook shots. Soon the partnership of 60 ended with the team losing Ben (H - 23) and in came Nick. With a brilliant partnership building and the opposition under pressure – the oppositions skipper made changes to the field and it paid off - The fielder in deep took a brilliant catch off Ben (G - 36) forcing Zooby to bat. Unfortunately, Zooby had to return early to a brilliant ball. In came Avish – the most experienced, senior, capable, true-legend, stylish batsman, brilliant bowler, fielder, MORE COMPLIMENTS HERE…, tall, handsome and beautiful, oops! (ed - how much has he paid you?!). The pair batted well, but unfortunately, the team lost Nick (31) followed by Charlie and Avish (36) in quick succession. With Asim and Savan (myself) on the pitch – and me determined to play the 40 overs (even though the game was meant to be of 35 overs/innings - ed - Savan did decide that we should play 35, given the heat, this was a magnificent decision!). A well-executed ball got Asim and brought George to the crease. The pair batted well with me continuing to be defensive, again believing the innings was meant to be 40 overs. The team ended scoring 170/8. With a quick innings break – the team was on the field. The skipper was quite confident with the bowling attack and handed the ball to the opening pair (Paul and George). The opening pair bowled brilliantly giving the opposition no room to score easy runs. After a short spell on a sunny day, in came Avish and Asim. Asim struggled a bit with his line and length but soon got it right. All this time I was miles away (ed - midwicket) from the pitch – appealing for everything that hit the pad. Finally, I agreed with Charlie to appeal only when Charlie appeals (ed - I (Charlie) suggested that perhaps waiting for the bowler and keeper to be vaguely interested might help). Mannn, it was hard to keep quiet! I wasn’t bowling due to the damn Physio who suggested I not bowl for the next two weeks – The ball was handed to Nick. Nick being Nick bowled brilliantly – no loose balls, ball moving violently in the air – causing all sorts of trouble to the batsmen. The skipper decided to get some leg-spin in action and the ball was handed to Ben. Well, the ball didn’t spin – maybe it was the pitch or maybe Ben’s palm. BUT THE BALL DIDN’T SPIN. (ed - but it did bounce and somehow got a wicket...with a long hop). Soon the regular bowlers came back to the attack and kept it tight. The innings came to an end at 127/4 with Paul, Asim, Avish and Ben managing to secure a wicket each. George and Nick bowled brilliantly but were unlucky with the wickets. Man of the match – Paul for his brilliant spell. Champagne moment – Massive six on the offside by Ben G. (ed - and the catch at point by the opposition fielder off Ben G) Funny Moment of the day (AKA Dick of the day) – Savan (ed - by popular demand) after trying to claim the champagne moment for scoring 7 runs, in about 3 overs and all those ridiculous LBW appeals made during the game. Special thanks to Charlie for helping the skipper with his experience on the field. Well-kept Charlie and thanks for filling in! 😊 (ed - thanks for allowing a part time keeper to crash the party) |
