The mighty MPSGA XI made the long journey to the heart of West Sussex to face Elsted cricket club. The journey was long and tiring and by the time we reached the destination we were in dire need of a lovely cold pint. Lucky the local pub provided such luxuries and although there were chickens frolicking around in the beer garden, the boys were refreshed after a few pints to play 70 overs of top quality cricket. With our fearless leader on vacation, stand in skipper Nicky Ison won the toss and sent us into bat. Wibbs and Hannaford got us off to a great start putting on 43 for the first wicket before Hannaford fell for 5. But sadly, one usually brings two and Wibbs followed for a solid 36. Ross and Rohit started to rebuild before Ross fell for 15. Sam came and went for a duck and when Rohit departed for a fine 42, we were in trouble at 5 for 106 in the 22nd. JJ and Nicky were tasked with picking up the pieces and taking us to a defendable score. Unfortunately, JJ departed for 12 and when Gus came to the crease, the opposition decided to bring on 2 bowlers who bowled slower than a three-toed sloth trying to get food. Sadly, in the attempt to score quick runs slow bowling is not the one to face and Gus was dismissed for 1 quickly followed by Nicky for 12. Briggs, Lye, and Smith then added some valuable runs with quick running between the wickets to set 165 to win. Smith and Ison got our defence off to a great start bowling great lengths and making the batsmen play. Sadly, it was one of those days in the field with several chances getting dropped. On another day it could have been very different. Luckily though, Ison made the breakthrough, and we were back in business. Briggs and Gus continued the bowling, and both looked excellent in deceiving the batsmen with both generating chances which were sadly not taken until Brigg’s slower ball brought us back into the game and when Gus dismissed the batsmen who made 77, we were a chance. As the opposition approached the target, their run rate slowed down and they were finding it hard to score. With JJ taking a wicket and Lye (with one hand) bowling heat which was unlucky to not get a wicket due to a chance going down and the ball bouncing over middle stump (his first Putney wicket is yet to come). Gus made a regular cricket comment to get the shit batsmen on strike to try get him out. REDACTED. As a sad as the ending was, it was a great day at a beautiful ground in the middle of nowhere. A perfect build up to next week’s showdown against the Sunday 2nd XI. |
