Cricket, bloody hell. We limped to 79ao and won! According to the PCC Moneyball analysis (find it on the website in the Extras section, data goes back to 2006) this is the first time a Putney side has scored less than hundred and defended it. The oppo have only done so once! How did it come to this? To be fair, it was the best April edge of square strip, but too many kept low. Disciplined batters could survive and Alex O (27) showed that the bad balls could be put away. But there were, equally, too many lame dismissals, and a couple of smart catches too. James B (11) could’ve slapped that pie anywhere, Alex O made it too easy for long off, Adam S will be kicking himself. Amogh exhorted us to deliver a strong start. A first ball four did not help but GP and Tom S were on the money and the pressure ticked up a bit. To which RCC failed to respond. GP burst through a couple of times and soon they were 20-3. Amogh did very well behind the stumps (good footwork comes naturally). Then Nikit Patel struck and struck again, a maiden five fer, bowling a straight and heavy ball. There was a Hugo and Doug combo (you would have had to have been there to fully appreciate it) and surely now there could only be one winner. It fell to Murali deliver the final blow, chasing a drive down to long on, a hard flat throw scored a direct hit. There was a party, he was at it. |
