A jubilee weekend would not be complete without a game of sunday cricket full of exactly what Putney cricket is all about: resurrections from hangovers, questionable food choices, relaxing beers post game and the occasional outbreak of some actual cricket. The Ploughmans are fast becoming a reliable fixture to look forward to - the Dulwich Sports Ground where they play has multiple games to watch when breaking for tea or post game and has the distinction of offering an 8 pint jug - making the journey all the more worth while. The long-awaited return of match teas are in full force too, with the one criticism being that two doughnuts between 22 really does provide envy more than enjoyment. We arrived in stages of time, awareness and preparedness with Gus taking on responsibilities of tossing while I made my way through the Tulse Hill traffic. Bat first was the call and the impending weather forecasts had us wondering whether we would even get to half time. Dev was reliable in his assessment of what to watch out for with the rain - when it goes suddenly cold after being very humid run for cover - luckily we were back in Putney by the time the heavens opened. We batted solidly on a sticky wicket, with everyone contributing to our 206-6 off 40. 54 for Adam and 48* for Dev stood out with a notable mention to Cam for sending his first ball over the midwicket fence. While runs were piled on I tucked into a breakfast of Haribo on the fence and Gus proceeded to use a nearby tree as cover for recovery from four days of drinking - sewing up DDJ nice and early. When the time came to bowl I had my concerns for his condition but despite saying he was "not feeling good" at tea he produced some immaculate lines and two in two bowled with prodigious swing (2-17). Paul C (2-20) was miserly at the other end and we were fielding well enough to keep their scoring to a minimum. Cam (2-19) and Ifan (2-15) brought more pace and swing and we were well on top by drinks - some unusually good sunday fielding (I took a blinder) was matched by moments of utter ineptitude (I let through 10 byes) - i'm sure we can blame the greasy surface for those. The last wicket proved a challenge but was finally claimed by John (1-21) - his first ever wicket no less! 118 all out and a solid outing from our band of 10. A harsh TFC for Ross (13, no catches) with our absent 11th man the real winner of that most prestigious award. Runs trump wickets with Adam MotM and John's inaugural wicket claiming MPSGAFKACPSTMOD (or whatever it is now). Yours truly forgot the liquor so chits in the bar required for the next one! |
