Fullers Sunday League 1/4 Final Cup KO On a muggy bank holiday Monday, round two of the Putney Old-Mid Whitgiftians bout was staged. Putney batted first and some late swingers did for Brambley and Iqbal as the youthful old-mid whitgiftians got off to the best possible start. Khanna and Middleton counterattacked and put on 50 for the 3rd wicket with Khanna's 'Inzamam-esque' flare shining through in his strokeplay and between the wickets. Middleton looked in royal touch as he looked to hop on the bandwaggon. He stuck around until hitting one shot too many and getting caught out. Wickets fell and Putney found themselves in a spot of bother with 7 down for less than 100. McCann came to the crease and made it clear all was not lost yet with a battling 25. Hoskins, Thwaites and Malik gave support late on and by the time the door at number 10 was knocked down, Putney had limped to 151, a score that gave a glimmer of hope of something to bowl at. Middleton and Iqbal were given the Putney new ball and with just the first ball of their innings the Old-Whitgit opener's lazy drive-thru gave 'Wendys' some early business. He went onto finish with a crucial 3-wicket haul including that of a chatty left hander who explained the wide rule to one of the umps only to realise the same umpire definitely did know the LBW rule an over later. Not willing to miss the boat, Iqbal played his part in the Old Wittygits demise as he weighed in with 2 early wickets. Two of the younger Old Gits then steadied the ship but Khanna's steady 'you miss I hit' strategy worked well (4 for 12) as wickets began to tumble. Only some late resistance from a truly old git took the Old Mid Whitgifts close and that was probably down to Brambley offering the left hander the offer of a pint should he take up the prickly invitation to hit the Mallik down the ground once more for four. Apparently the pint went down well. 151-9 and 1 to win and the field in close. Khanna bowled a juicy full toss and the tense number 11 knocked it straight back to scilly mid-on where Middleton produced a fine dive to snaffle an easy catch and send the game to the bowl-offs. The Aussie then went on to hit a successful strike in the bowl out and with all others missing, thus securing himself the MOM award and fine battling win for Putney against the odds. Great game.
