Lower Common was the scene of a brazen daylight mugging on Saturday. The perp is a well built Caucasian male who arrived late on the scene to steal the points. Whyteleaf made a valiant struggle to keep the game, but he was simply too strong and made off with all the points. He had two accomplices who are wanted for aiding and abetting. Whyteleaf made a poor start with early wickets for Trollip and Brook but rebuilt to 99 for three. Vines (49) provided some much needed acceleration, smacking Racchit for five fours in a row (followed by four byes!). Gareth Hughes put together a great spell (4-45) and Scott Gilbert was equally parsimonious (0-28). Rees (82) was the mainstay of their innings but they lacked depth and their 210 seemed plenty short. Perhaps that's why six dropped catches did not cause their usual angst. Lofty talk of a quick win over tea was just a lot of hot air as Wibbers and Shaw both threw away the wickets second ball. Peach (13) and Hughes (41) rebuilt, the latter playing some great shots under pressure, but at no time could Whyteleaf have they did not control the game: they bowled tightly enough, fielded keenly and survived a withering assault by Scott (82). He powerfully struck ten fours and three sixes in a great display, hitting sixteen then twenty in an over. But wickets fell continually and he could not do it all by himself. Brook, Hannaford and Trollip at nine ten jack had other ideas. The first two played straight and defended stoutly, hoping something would turn up. But who would give us any hope at thirty runs needed with only seven overs and one wicket left? But in came Brian in yet another match winning innings. Brian is no stranger to close finishes and for a guy at eleven he is making his runs and doing so under much pressure. He is playing straight when he needs to defend but that ball stays hit when it is in the slot. And so, with that mixture of judicious shot selection and great power Brian himself scored 30 of the the last 30 needed off only twenty balls! A wholly unexpected assault on an innocent Whyteleaf team so shaken by the violence that they preferred to slink off than spend time with those who'd roughed them up so badly. So, of course great scenes at Putney as Brian's great work help us avoid relegation. But I think we know that, apart from Hughes, Gilbert and Trollip's with both bat and ball, too many of us failed to make a contribution. One to fix for next season. |
