On an enjoyable day of great sporting moments, involving two proud clubs with long histories ‘Serious Sutton’ (in their 157th year) and ‘Playful Putney’ (in their 140th year) .. the afternoon, as I remember .. went something like this: 1.15 Brooksey and young Henry win the toss, Henry decides to bat on a flat track. 1.30 Vamsi enters the 100m, Doug takes guard. Vamsi runs himself out. 1.31 Faraad gives textbook Lbw decision, with perfect timing. Putney 0 for 2. 2pm Chinny finds the gaps. 2.01 Chinny smacks the ball in the air to the longest boundary ... straight to the fielder. 2.30 Ageing rockers Telfer and Perinparaja put on 40 odd taking the score to 60 for 5 3.10 Putney Colts bring up the ton ... but thats all. Putney 106 all out. 3.20 Tea was memorable .. Devonshire Scones and Onion Bhaji, form a good partnership. 3.30. Slovakia take a 1-0 lead. 3.40 Cannavaro should have got sent off (breaking news from Chinny’s I phone) 3.50 Simon, Dez, Chinny, Faraad eye up the new ball as we take to the field. 4.00 Sutton openers hit their first six. 4.15 Sutton openers hit their first tree. 4.30 Sutton 107 – 0 off 10. Game over. Must keep this fixture for next year. .. back in the clubhouse 4.40 Slovakia take a 3-1 lead. 4.41 Doug rejects Nets at Barns Elms, opting to try out the Sutton Nets instead! 4.45 Italy out of the 2010 World Cup. Trevi fountain in Rome, fills up with tears. 4.47 Isner wins 70-68 against Mahut in the fifth set in the longest match in Wimbledon history. 5pm Hussey bowled by Anderson, England roll over Aussies in the ODI in Cardiff. 5.10 Simon announces more wedding plans (and all the best for next weekend in York Simon) 5.20 Doug puts on a white dress shirt and his Umpires tie for the evening. 5.30 Chinny distributes his Lloyds Bank business card to all playing members and Non - playing members of both clubs. 6pm Putney players follow Fabio Capello’s advice and discuss the game with more beers and more time at the pool table (than at the crease) and eventually head home. Lessons to be learned : Next year lets make this a Twenty20 game and start at 5.30pm, so we don’t have to take a half day off to lose by 10 wickets! Man of the match : Dez for scoring 28 and tripling his average. |
