After last week’s poor showing in the league we had a friendly game to make amends, away to Woodmansterne. The day didn’t begin too well as players struggled through the South-West London gridlock to get to the clubhouse - apparently some little club on Fulham Broadway won something and wanted to annoy all the residents. We arrived at the ground and appreciated the excellent facilities they had on offer, then the skipper immediately lost the toss and we were put in. The opposition captain had his eyes on the T20 final starting at 4.30pm and didn’t want to be out in the field! The team is still finding its feet with a lot of new faces but we welcomed back Jamil for a cameo appearance. He found his groove in the first over with a glorious square drive and signs of things to come. But it was new boy Chris Bray who wasn’t to be intimidated and went on the attack. He was first out for a very aggressive 27 and the score 48-1 in the 7th over and we were traveling very nicely. Jamil then opened up and smashed the bowling everywhere including a few huge sixes and a lost ball. At drinks we were well placed at 134-2 (20 overs) and looking at a big total however 3 quick wickets after drinks changed the tone. Jamil out for a brilliant 79 when a certain century looked on the cards. The skipper settled things with new lad Rich Pinks who hit a few glorious shots down the ground, and after some tight bowling by the opposition at the death we finished on 224-6 as the rain started coming down. The tea break was a quick affair as it was already 5pm, but credit to the lunch makers at Woodmansterne. An excellent feed was prepared - good selection of fresh sandwiches, the usual quiche/sausage roll combination and a good variety of cakes for those with a low blood sugar. Sadly we couldn’t enjoy it in its full relaxing glory but 8/10 to the home side. The rain had continued lightly through the break and we resumed in damp conditions, with the pitch a bit softer now. Simon Taylor and Jay opened up in difficult conditions and did well under the circumstances. Jay in particular looked sharp and should’ve had greater reward for his spell. The home side were cruising a bit at 57-0 after 10 overs and we needed to tighten things up and take some wickets. The skipper came on and immediately dried up the runs from his end, conceding less than 2 per over while Dave Hadaway did the same at the other. This lead to a wicket straight away with Dave getting his first - the opener caught at mid-off - followed by a caught behind a few overs later. The frugal bowling was beginning to reap dividends and the skipper removed the other dangerous opener for 48 and they were struggling at 91-4 straight after the drinks break. Sadly the weather intervened and the heavens opened up as we left the field after 23 overs with the score 103-4. The game was called there and the lads headed to the bar to watch the completion of the T20 final. We felt like we would’ve gone on to win the game from where we were so hopefully we can take some confidence into this weeks league fixture against Old Emmanuel. Man of the Match was of course Jamil for his scintillating display with the bat and constant chatter in the field, but special mention to Dave Hadaway who bowled very well for his 3 wickets. |
