Last week, the Sunday 2’s had a thrilling match against the Sunday 3’s. Who would have thought this would happen again!! The oppo Streatham & Marlborough won the toss and decided to bat. A good opening partnership saw them through to 50 runs off 12 overs. Opening bowlers Chris and Raheel bowled well and were backed up by Sammy & VC Jon who scalped the openers. Former Putney player, Lee ‘the Viper’ Vidler scored a quick-fire 51 and accelerated the scoring to 5 runs an over. Needing a break through, Neeraj and Rich were brought on as second change bowlers and tore through the Streatham & Marlborough batting. Special mention to Neeraj’s grunting sound effects to fool the batsman into anticipating a short ball and bowling a slow yorker instead! That kind of trickery saw Neeraj take 5 wickets for 18 runs with Streatham & Marlborough restricted to 206 of 40 overs. In response, the Putney openers Neeraj (again!!) and Himi started well putting on 54 off 10 overs. Neeraj treated the bowling with little respect, tonking the first 5 overs for 40 runs. Himi, in a support role scored a patient 15 before being dismissed. Hussain at number 3 was solid and moved the score onto 125 off 22 overs before being caught at first slip for 23. Skipper Ash came in at number 4 but soon saw Neeraj depart for 95 with the score on 137 off 26 overs. With 70 runs to win off 84 balls, Streatham & Marlborough tightened the screws and brought on a spinner and seamer who bowled them back into the match. However, Trev at no 5 put away the bad balls and scored 16 runs before skying a full toss! With 50 runs to win of 8 overs, Raheel batting with Ash put on another 25 runs before being bowled for 12. With 20 runs required off 3 overs, Rich and Ash took the score onto 200 in 38.4 overs. Putney required 7 runs off 8 balls to win the match. Unfortunately, similar to the previous week, Ash was dismissed for 27 before seeing the team through to victory. Barry and Rich added 2 runs before Barry was caught behind for 1. Putney required 4 runs of 4 balls….one hit was all that was required! However, the guile of the Viper ensured only 1 run was conceded off the next 2 balls with Putney requiring 3 runs off the last ball!! Chris readied himself for the big shot, missed the ball which happened to bounce off the keeper….the oppo threw down at the stumps…..missed…… resulting in a 3 run over throw. Putney had won a another nail-biting match! |
