Threatening cloud cover greeted Putney 1s and their guests, Old Tiffinians. A remarkedly well conditioned pitch and outfield must be commended. Well done Eddie! With the toss once again going against the Putney skipper, Old Tiffs elected to bowl first hoping that the cloud cover would assist their new ball bowlers. What was to follow would be the first Putney collapse of the season. The opening pair of veteran Devon Ebersohn (2) and new comer Shaun Young (29) provided slow resistance with multiple drop catches before the loss of Ebersohn. From there the new ball zipped around and "bananared" at the command of the opposition bowlers. At 60 for 6 Putney were in all sorts of trouble. Two further wickets masked the change in fortune of the opposition team. Both opening bowlers had suffered early season injuries which opened the door for the newly demoted allrounder, Chin Ratnayake. In partnership with James Peters all resistance was swashbuckled away. A near record 9th wicket partnership of over 100 saw Putney rise from 97 for 8 to 204 for 8 declared. After a relieved and relaxed tea, Putney were back out on the field chasing 10 wickets for the second victory of the season. And chase we did. Some very accurate new ball bowling saw Old Tiffs struggle for runs. With the win put to the back of the opposing batsman's minds, playing for the draw was the tactic. Or so it seemed. A very welcome pitch invasion by the opposing captain saw a quite comical argument break out between batsman and the aforementioned invader. With theories on batmanship now thoroughly discussed, Putney pounced. A laboured 54/2 off 25 overs quickly became 85/9 due to a fine display of spin bowling from Ian Almond who finished with figures of 6/29 off 15 overs. Alas this was not enough. On a day where 16 opposition wickets could have been taken only 9 were in the end. At 97/9 the innings came to a close with Putney left rueing missed chances. Man of the match was a close call with the coming of age of a talented number 10 Chin Ratnayake (74*) but in the end great spin bowling on a seamer friendly wicket saw Ian Almond take the honours. With safer hands Putney will be a tough test for many sides this year. |
