A devastating spell of leg spin bowling by Ollie Wrighton (8-40) won the game for Putney but only once Tony Fenton (50) and the tail had succeeded in wresting away the initiative from Roehampton. We lost the toss and were put in, finding ourselves soon 66-6 against a keen opening attack. Fenton put on 40 with Shaw (20), 30 with Mike Smith (13) and when he fell for a fine and patient 50, Brian McMillan scored a fine 28 to put on another 30 with Auggie Pereira (11*). So our last four wickets trebled our score. Opening bowler Cameron toiled for 21 straight overs to take 6-70 but they used only 2 other bowlers who were straight but not greatly threatening. When we applied ourselves, we could make them bowl to our areas and dig ourselves out of a hole and score 197ao. Ollie and Mike opened with the old ball, beginning a great tussle with Cameron, now opening the batting (full value for his match fee). He used his feet really well to negate Ollie's turn but never dominated. Ollie took wickets regularly, bowled or lbw, none better than bowling Pete Dandy around his legs: pitched leg, hit middle. A smart run out from Mike kept them in a box, Ollie ripped one through Cameron to get his man and, just when the last pair were hanging around too long, Ollie nailed the #11 with another big turner and was chaired off triumphant on his team mates shoulders. 108ao. We need the Club Historian to tell us the last time one of our number took an 8 fer. So, we stay top this week courtesy of a great turn around story. Well done the team. |
