We wos thwarted. We got put in having lost the toss and Mark Wibberley played in the expansive style to which we've become accustomed for a fine 85 (13x4, 2x6). Mark always kept the fielders interested without giving a full chance but that's his style these days, and great it was to watch. A Wibberley 50 really takes the pressure off the team and puts it right on the oppo. Abhishek Kumar played attractively for his 27 at #3 and Murad fashioned a fine 51 #4 but it was six and out! So we had the runs in the bag and declared on 228-9 off 45.3 overs. The pitch was occasionally spicy so we felt in with a shout. Effingham made a lousy start and were soon 67 for 7. Smart catches behind the wicket supported JJ and Brian; Usman put in a sound spell of offspin. But, as we are learning, bowling teams out is hard even in 50 overs and their Dixon, at seven, started scoring increasingly freely in a fine 86. He took the score to 116-8 before Shaw at first slip took a one handed blinder off Murad. JJ yorked Dixon with a fine ball (batter and bowler sporting shaking hands, 172-9) and fully deserved his four wickets. We were still unable to winkle out the last pair in the last four overs. In fact, we took only 2 wickets in the last 25 overs. So, we had all the game but more or less merely shared the points. |
