Putney v Horley 18/8/2012 On the hottest day of the year stand in skip, Brian couldn’t have started the day any better. Not only did he win the toss, but he put the other side in and ensured that most of the side spent the afternoon in shade. One (almost) has to feel sorry for Doug, at no previous time in the season had any of his “decisions†to have a bat been welcomed with any warmth from the dressing room. Mike (22) and Julian (20) got the side of to a great start. Julian, perhaps inspired by the brash batting stylings of his partner, put away the neat nudges and unfurled a number of forceful drives down the ground. Mike managed to deposit Horley’s fearsome opening (off spinner) for a lovely six over mid-wicket before being bowled trying to repeat the feat. The departure of the openers brought Ollie (38) and Sujith (88) to the crease. After starting slowly Ollie played a number of glorious pulls and sweeps. While Sujith plundered the Horley attack to all quarters of the ground throughout his fine knock and was particularly brutal straight and through mid wicket. After Ollie’s departure, Pat (18) and Fents (9) kept the strike turning over to ensure Sujith could continue on his marauding way. Their departure set the stage for Paul McCann, club stalwart and all round good guy, to gloriously stride his way to his 1000th club run (he was 13 runs short). After stroking his first ball through cover point to get of the mark the crowd* around the common was buzzing with excitement. To the crowd’s absolute disbelief (and Brian’s knowing nod), Paul played all round his next delivery to be out for a well made four. Ussie (3*) guided us to 218 before Brian pulled the plug on the innings, leaving Hugo on 0 not out, having not faced a ball. Clearly delirious with heat exhaustion, and with no answer for the incisive opening spells of Lincoln (7/0/30/3) and Paul (8.2/5/7/2), Horley slumped to 6-28, including 2 disastrous run outs. Perhaps as a result of this we took our foot of the gas and let Horley rack up an 80 run 7th wicket stand. While Brian (5/0/26/0), Hugo (6/1/12/0), Mike (3/0/9/0) and Fents (2/0/7/0) bowled good area’s they were let down by some lacklustre catching. One catch in particular bears mentioning. Hugo bowled a beautiful outswinger to catch an edge which flew low towards Julian at first slip, only for Patrick (filling in with the gloves)to dive across elegantly and cruelly deny Julian the opportunity to drop the catch himself. Eventually, Ollie (8/1/36/2) managed to get the breakthroughs that we needed. This set up the stage for Paul to clean up the final wicket (100th for Putney)(consolation prize?) just as the team was getting worried about bad light ruining our claim to 20 points. Horley all out for 127 off 39.2 overs. A good all round effort and a great knock from Sujith. * it being the hottest day of the year there were in fact a heightened number of members of the public “following†the match from the side of the field. |
