The first round of the cup drew us against old adversaries Effingham who had some how managed to beat us the in the league the year before and had as much grace in victory as Hitler did after blitzkrieging Poland. It was safe to say we had a score to settle. We started well, Devon lost the toss and we were put into bat. Having been put through the ordeal of hearing the oppo giving a tone deaf rendition of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" at 3,500 decibels Matt and Chip opened on a truly tricky wicket. The scoring was very slow and we eventually lost Chip (5) LBW in the 9th over with the score on 13. This was the start of a collapse that would even make New Zealand blush. Devon (5) soon joined him after being given LBW to a ball that hit his thighpad. Wendy (10) played some nice strokes before popping one to a fielder. Matt, having played every shot in the book but connected with few was out next, caught for 6. Nate got bowled by the pitch for a duck and Piers couldn't get his bat down quickly enough to avoid the same fate for 2. Bam Bam (13) was playing almost reservedly when Anmol joined him at the crease but soon perished chipping one to a fielder and Putney were 55 for 7. Cue Anmol to play the best innings of his Putney career. He played beautifully square of and behind the wicket with trademark lateness, wristiness and running between the wickets at a Bolt-like pace. Ably supported by Tin Tin (7) Chad (10) and Hensh (3*) while he farmed the strike he took the attack to the Effingham bowlers before being bowled in the final over for 71 and giving Putney a respectable, but far from ideal score of 160 all out. The pitch had been slowly drying out and become nicer to bat on....Would we be out of the cup in our first round against the old enemy? Chad and Will opened the bowling and it wasn't long before, despite the better batting conditions that we had a break through. Will 6/1/14/1 bowled one opener and Chad 5/1/14/2 soon accounted for the other LBW and then the number 3 caught by Anmol. Effingham were teetering at 20/3. Enter the only resistance we encountered, the large and unorthadox Latif. He could still only score sratchily but wickets fell around him. Piers 9/1/34/2 got rid of numbers 5 and 6 before Hensh was brought into the attack. Hensh obviously had no time for corny Top Gun soundtracks and set about removing Effingham's last wickets, as well as their dignity. Bowling with intelligence and moving the ball both ways he bowled the last 4 people including the irritating Latif for the some total of 7 runs finishing 5.1/2/7/4 and reducing Effingham to 85 all out. After Latif's 29, the second highest score was extras at 13. So Effingham ended up loosing that loving feeling after all, by 75 runs. Putney progress to the next round of the cup and showed character and strength in depth despite the early collapse. |
