After winning the toss Putney decided to field first. Ed Dixon and Ben Brook opened the bowling and Putney failed to capitalise on two early opportunities with catches not being taken. Nick Jarrett joined the bowling attack as first change and managed to take the first Morden wicket, but Morden continued to score at a steady pace, with the one remaining opener still scoring freely. Jon Jarrett joined the bowling attack shortly afterwards and took a wicket in his second over thanks to a safe pair of hands and a catch that Ben Brook made look easy. After the remaining opposition opener had cruised past 50, a further bowling change, saw Racchitt Khanna bowl 3 of good pressure overs and managing to clean bowl him. Ed McVarish came on next and as usual slowed the opposition run rate and helped the Putney cause by taking another wicket. After an expensive opening over from Ian Jennings, which saw him hit for three successive sixes, he focused again in his second over and took the wicket of the attacking batsman. Steady bowling helped keep the run total to just over 200, which could easily have been 250 following the good start by Morden. Nick Lilja and Rohit Khanna opened the batting. A strong start from Rohit put pressure on the opposition bowling and got the runs flowing quickly. Just as Rohit was settling in he played onto his stumps. Shaun Kaplan joined Nick and looked confident at the crease and made the most of more dropped catches off their batting, scoring 78 off 14 overs. Nick's powerful stroke play pushed the opposition fielders out towards the boundary. The loss of Shauns wicket brought Racchitt to the wicket, who followed family form to cause trouble for the opposition bowlers. Unfortunately only a few good shots were played before a moment’s indecision caught Racchitt between the front and back foot leading to him being bowled and the bails flying back towards the wicket keeper. Mike Curtis, who when behind stumps gave his usual generous opinions on the quality of the Putney bowling, now had his chance to seal the game for Putney. After a few defensive shots Mike was able to take 3 runs of a gentle forward defensive shot when the opposition continued to demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in the field by gifting Mike with generous over throws at each end of the pitch. For Mike it was only a short-lived time at the crease, losing his wicket on 14, with Morden finally taking a catching opportunity. Even with the loss of wickets, the lack of life in the pitch allowed Putney to keep the progress going and a steady flow of runs on to the scoreboard. Nick Lilja, through a combination of some great stoke-play and a little fortune managed to put Putney in a great position to go on to win the match. Nicks total being 75 when he was out caught and bowled. Ian Jennings came out to bat next at 6, and after a few cautious shots gained confidence quickly. The flow of runs on both sides of the wicket began to raise a cheer from the rest of the team on the edge of the pitch. Real belief that we were still in with chance, mixed with concern that we were rapidly running out of batting in a strong bowling side made for an edgy last hour. Ben Brook and Ian Jennings continued to progress Putney towards a victory, Ian with confident play all around the pitch and Ben with a good mix of creative stroke play and strong defence. With only two batsmen to come, Ian remained strong leading Putney to a great victory on a beautiful day with his lifetime best of 42 not out. |
