22 of us made it down to the Lower Common, overcoming the closed roads from the Olympic cycling. The Olympian spirit continued: it was to be Putney TeamGB vs Putney Rest of the World. Both teams looked pretty good on paper and we had a few lesser known players in the teams. RoW batted first and Wibbers and Will M blazed away in their normal style. Will then played too early to leg and spooned to gully. It was a fine pitch, the first hard one of the year, with lots of carry for Piers who bowled sharply. And GB held several fine catches, at slip, Brooksy plucking a drive diving one handed at short midwicket; yeah, crazy, right?! A sharp Fents one handed c&b saw off Barry and only Abhishek (48) got the score, playing his own game, patiently and straight. A really big score cannot be far away. But he was running out of partners and was last out. RoW had mustered a sub par 135. Shaw and Gillies both got fifties (retiring not out) as they put on over 100 for the first wicket. But it was hard work to begin with. Both struggled against Will, barely getting anything off the middle, plenty of edges being beaten. Brian put down a sharp one at third slip. Lincoln was also tidy. But the pressure eased and the runs came. Jack Marriott Smalley reminded us it was a cruel game: 85* last week, golden this week, drilling a full toss to mid wicket. So, a great day in the sun, the right result for the hosts and much fun all round. Thanks to Eddie for a super track. |
