Saturday began with optimism in the sun and finished in a rather tame defeat, in thunder, lightning and in rain. Again, two players showed up plenty late and so we had to bat first winning the toss. Mark (29) played with his customary élan, pies at one end, accuracy at the other. Both he and Doug (13) fell to filth of the first order but Parshav (20) and James P (80) took things on. James played really well, as he had threatened to all year, mixing leg side pushes with silky drives and deft sweeps. Macca fell to even more appalling filth from one of two bowlers who bowled only a single over each (and were lucky to get on at all). The openers returned and 165-3 became 185-8 as Fents was out first ball in what's becoming a barren season for him, and David Wibberley (brother of) ran out James Toseland. Saad pushed it around and Brian teed off. 199-8 and we declared. We had not batted them out the game but it would've been a good match were they to knock them off. At 44-4 and 87-5, we were in the box seat. Brian removed both danger men and Macca was dangerous but wicketless. Fents got their opener caught by James at first slip with his first ball and snaffled two others but the rain came and it affected us more than them. Their #7 smote 68* out of the 110 needed and took the game away from us (whereas our own middle order folded meekly). The ball became soapy, head high full tosses abound (to the boundary, generally) and fielders struggled to pick it up. There was little point whinging that it was too wet or dark, there was still a game to be played. There was a single hard chance put down - it might've mattered - their incoming batters at 9 and 10 had not bowled so I presume they were not much cop. Perhaps we declared to early but I am betting were weren't far away from a decent win either. Still a title to play for... |
