This was a competitive game that had its ebbs and flows before settling in for a losing draw, for which we had to fight. Another lost toss and they batted first. 13 off the first over was ominous as Hensh got carted in his three overs despite an early wicket. Brian was rock solid at the other end and benefited from a smart catch at mid off as their openers tried too much too soon. In fact, Big Mac gave us his biggest spell yet. Despite there being little in the wicket and a lightening fast outfield, he bowled twenty overs straight for less than three an over. This really helps the captain maintain control even when wickets aren't falling. He kept an immaculate line for a 6-3 field and they could never take liberties. I kept thinking about taking him off but there was no need! Hugo bowled a smart ten over spell the other end and then Ollie too (3-58) who always looked like taking a wicket even when attack. Many skewed drives were tantalisingly out of reach and Matt could not hold a couple of snicks at slip - mobility issues. James T picked up his first league wicket but they got after him. Saad, when eventually replacing Brian after fielding sweeping on the boundary for ever, was tidy off a shortened run. Somehow they made it to 241 but we had reason to be confident. We had a slow start, Doug 18 balls to get off the mark. Matt was fluent but fell to a fine catch at mid off. This brough in Ollie (41) who picked things up and 35-1 off 13 became 105-2 off 23 when Doug (50) fell. So we were in the hunt but the middle order misfired against a decent slow left armer despite another twenty or thirty something from JP (29). Who from, 9, 10 or jack could get 20 odd to get us over the line? No. So it was left to Hugo and Saad to defend with some aplomb against tidy bowling and ever optimistic and frequent appealing. ******************************************************* I think it is worth reflecting on patience. They had little of it early on and it cost them a poor start. If we occupy the crease, we will get the runs as most teams' second string bowlers aren't great. We've too often been impatient with big early drives. Matt gave chances in his 117* but moved to another level when he kept the ball on the deck, Julian batted a long time but go us to 240 to win. But at Haslemere and in this game and eslewhere, big drives, skied too many balls and cost too many wickets, giving the middle and late order too much to do. |
