Saturday 2s vs Roehampton

We enjoyed a straightforward win against fellow common dwellers Roehampton. The forecast was ropey, it was cold, windy, the skies glowered. The pitch was hard to read so in winning the toss, we fielded first. Bats 1 to 3 did well enough with scores of 32, 10 and 20 but it was hard yards for them against accurate bowling and there were few sounds shots in front of the wicket. Our slips were always interested without anything going to hand. And full credit to our bowlers, in particular Saad Hannan and David Higson on their league dayboos for Putney (I choose my words carefully, Saad is an Ironsides emigre). But 66-1 subsided to 134-9 off 44, an over lost for a heavy shower. I guess they did not have much depth and they were not helped by 3 leg befores that on other days would not have been given. Mark gave us a punishing start, taking 18 off their opener's first two overs and forcing an early bowling change. He got to 33 with a big 6 but then out. JP was also 6 and out, Chip steadied the ship but Nathan Rutherford (in golf shoes?) brought us home in expansive style, strong off his legs and hitting hard. But in the end we had more all round depth in all departments and the 20 points were deservedly ours. |
