A beautiful day on Barnes Common, and a great fixture to boot. The sun was out as we tried to find the slightly awkwardly-placed Barnes Common ground, but find it we did, and won the toss and elected to field. Short boundaries and a high-vis pink ball meant this was always going to be a high scoring game. The Barnes Common openers got stuck in to our opening bowlers early on, before we pegged them back and started taking regular wickets. Paul Hogarth (5-0-15-3) bowled well, with Brooksey and Willow (both 7-0-50-2) chipping in good spells as well. We had a few lapses in the field, most notably an episode where we conspired to give away three overthrows from the same ball, from three different throws to the stumps. But overall the fielding was good with Rob Millar pouching two awkward catches and Willow taking a stinking reaction catch over his head Our chase got off to a shaky start, losing both 2 and 3 for ducks. But Tom Moore (91), Rich Willson (35) and Brooksey (32) put together a well-paced chase before getting out to leave us with just a little to much to do. Dave, Tan, Rob and Chris Henson all gave it ago, but we lost wickets and ended up agonisingly close, losing by just 6 runs. All in all a good match against pleasant and well-matched opposition, we now just need to take that extra step and claim our first win. |
