With sadness we learned that Maurice, our President, passed away in January 2006
On returning from the services after the Second World War Maurice had a great deal to do with the regrouping of the club, as during the war the club had been disbanded and the cricket ground had been taken over by the authorities. Therefore, in 1946, the club had to start from scratch and a few enthusiastic members came together, of which Maurice was one, and the club was reborn.
Maurice played regular cricket for the club on both Saturdays and Sundays until the mid sixties and was the 1st team opening batsman and wicket keeper. He was always enthusiastic about his cricket and his responsibilities of the many offices he held. As captain he was a great host to visiting teams and was well known among the club cricket world. He was instrumental in encouraging Jim Laker to turn out for the club. Maurice was also a keen footballer and played for Lister FC in goal. Unfortunately, whilst keeping goal he sustained a bad injury, which curtailed his football.
Maurice held several offices in the club, he was appointed match secretary in 1946 and held this position until 1954. He was 1st team skipper from 1949 to 1965, became Chairman in 1972, which he held until he was appointed President of the club in 1977. He was President of both Putney and Ventnor, Isle of Wight cricket clubs until he died.
On a lighter note, in the early period after the war, Maurice had the only car in the first team and his car seemed to have an elastic body as players piled in to go to away matches. Coming back it had even more elasticity.
In his later years Maurice lived permanently on the Isle of Wight where he owned a holiday complex with good sporting facilities "say no more".
Our thoughts go out to Barbara, his wife, and the rest of his family.
